How do you go about quitting work early? The answers to that question are as varied as the people of whom you ask it. And so are the answers to these questions:
• What is your vision for your retirement?
• Are you looking forward to living this dream?
• When do you think you’ll be able to achieve this vision?
• DO you think you’ll be able to achieve this vision?
When I think about the first two questions, I get a far-off look in my eyes as I envision the life I’d like to lead as a retiree. Am I anticipating living this vision? Absolutely!!
But get to the next two questions and the far-off look in my eyes begins to cloud a little. The fact is that I HAVE retired. I recently retired from federal service at age 48 ½. But am I living my vision? No – not yet.
I was lucky enough to slide right into a much better position with a new company and invest most of my retirement benefits so that they keep growing. But I still have to work, as I have three more kids to get through college.
I have set a foot on the path to realizing my retirement vision, but I can’t start living that dream for another 15 years. If I want to retire before then, I have to do something now.
This is not to say that I’ve only just now started thinking about ways to give up working early. Years ago I investigated ways to earn income while staying home with the kids. The most prevalent work-from-home companies at that time were MLMs, and I did my fair share of them.
None of them was right for me, though. The biggest deterrents were the time involved and the fact that I had to try to sell products or book events … or both. When you’re working a full-time job already, you don’t want to spend another 20-odd hours a week working at another business.
Even if I’d been able to get one of these businesses to the point of profitability, I wouldn’t have been able to sit back and let the momentum of the company continue to bring in the money. Sure, a lot of them have compensation plans, even retirement plans, once a person gets to a certain level. But it takes a lot of work to get to those levels, and to be honest … I just didn’t want to have to work that hard.
Let’s face it – who wants to run a race so hard that they’re too exhausted to enjoy the finish line? But those of us who want to stop working early have been doing just that … until the Internet gave us a way to do things a little differently.
There are still plenty of traditional operating models on the Internet, but they cost money to start up. In addition to purchasing an inventory to sell, there are costs to create and maintain a website and possibly buy marketing assistance to help get your ads seen among millions of other ads.
Sometimes you can forego the inventory and website costs if you’re with a company that lets you “share” their site as an affiliate and sell from their platform. But getting traffic to your website still takes getting out there and selling the conventional way.
