Popping Pirates into Video Games

Age of Pirates: Captain Blood is an action adventure video game due out in early 2011. Based on the novel of the same name by Rafael Sabatini, it was originally to be released for the first Xbox in 2006 before finding itself among Xbox 360 games due out in 2011. As you might expect, in the game you traverse both land and sea defeating enemies and amassing treasure. But what does it mean to be a pirate, and why are they popping up everywhere these days? Read on to find out, me buckoes!

In the simplest sense of the word, a pirate is someone who commits robbery (and often also acts of violence) at sea. Widespread since ancient times, pirates adhered to a fairly strict code and many crews even bore the hallmarks of democracy (long before traditional Western societies at the time). With key roles such as the quartermaster and captain decided by the crew, monetary provisions were also made for any who might be maimed in battle. Treasure was not always simply gold; it was often comprised of more mundane items as well, such as foods, clothes and even soap.

Today’s most well known (and loved) pirate series is arguably the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Based on the old Walt Disney ride of the same name, it was the last one he personally designed before his death. Originally meant to be a walk through wax museum, the Pirates of the Caribbean ride instead turned out to be a series of humorous pirate-themed sketches acted out by audio-animatronic figures. Maybe one day it will be emulated as a 3DS game (which could possibly be both awesome and creepy)?

So if you’re ever looking over your PC games and find Sid Meier’s Pirates! sitting lonely and unloved among your collection why not give it a whirl? Shiver me timbers!
