Socialization While Homeschooling

If we contemplate a well known tragic occurrence at a school in the recent past, we may be able to draw some lessons from it. The well known killings at Columbine High School put the national spotlight on issues such as the social environment at schools. Even worse, other events of a similar nature have occurred as well. Various measures, such as increased security and cooperation from local police forces, to prevent future outbreaks of violence. Many parents who want to safeguard their children from such an environment have taken the homeschooling route. As long as parents who homeschool their kids make sure that they’re exposed to enough social and cultural events, it’s hard to argue with their point of view.

Educational quality does not always equal the same amount of time. One statement we saw indicated that roughly six hours of education in a public school is worth approximately two hours in the home school. In terms of study and learning at home, many home schooled children report they can accomplish more in a day. There can be benefits to this since it would allow them more time to devote to other pursuits which will allow them to socialize. Organizations are beginning to create specialized activities for homeschoolers so they are able to have a social outlet.

In many cases, the financial situation of the parents plays a significant role in the socialization of a home schooled child. There are many ways for children to be exposed to social situations.

However, very many organizations are not free to join, and the additional costs can be a real burden for homeschooling parents. Unfortunately, parents may not always be able to pay all these costs, which ends up excluding the kids from these activities. There is also a possible danger of creating the desire for children to experience the public school environment. If parents tend to keep their children too insulated, this can backfire and cause them to want what other kids have.

In the degree of socialization, there seems to be a trade-off, but it is worth it when other considerations are made. There are many negative social encounters that the homeschooler can be spared from attending public and private schools. That fact alone can be huge considering the effects of the institutional school environment. This is especially true for those students who are at a social disadvantage at a public school. There are many positive and healthy advantages experienced in the home and they have far more of an important impact.

The debate between homeschooling and socialization has been a topic of conversation for an eternity. There will always be relevant points on either side. One of the most important aspects of this is for parents to ensure their homeschooled children are exposed to healthy social outlets. Only the remoteness of the family’s location could make this difficult.
