The Most Beautiful Village Near My Home In Portugal Is Without A Doubt Obidos.
Very close by to my home in Portugal there is a wonderful little village called Obidos. There is no doubt at all that in Portugal Obidos is one of the top attractions anywhere in the whole country.
Just to clarify in case you missed it, Obidos in Portugal and not the one in Brasil, is one of the seven wonders of Portugal.
There are some things you need to know before visiting this beautiful medieval town.
The village has the protection of its high stone wall
and there a castle within those walls…an incredible and complete castle where they hold festivals nearly every month of the year.
There are always plenty of places to stay in Obidos, in fact if you are looking for Obidos hotels then perhaps it would pay you to go a little further afield and try out and English bed and breakfast instead. It would get you away from the hustle bustle in the village, which is probably part of the reason you wanted to come here in the first place.
Something to be aware of as you enjoy the spectacle of this village, is that the walk around the walls is not the safest thing to do while you are there. No, the narrow walls are totally are devoid of safety rails and in a few places it feels rather scary.
Best to stay clear of the walls unless you are not afraid of heights anyway…just enjoy the sights at ground level which include many cafes and restaurants, a deer sanctuary and a lot of shops selling the local strong liqueur. Especially do not approach the walls after having consumed the Ginja!
Venture into the village outside the castle to find more treasures. An aqua-duct from roman times crosses the whole village and its arches fill the background of one of the car-parks. Drive towards the village of Arelho and you will come to the salt lagoon that used to reach all the way to the castle walls but now is a few kilometers away.
What ever you think in the end, Obidos is a wonderful day out and if you want to go on somewhere else after then the world or rather Portugal is your clamshell.
